The film begins with Kattappa (Sathyaraj), a loyal slave warrior of Mahishmati, narrating the story of Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas) to his son Mahendra Baahubali (Prabhas), also known as Shiva. Amarendra was the son of late king Vikramadeva, who was killed by his brother Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati) with the help of his father Bijjaladeva (Nassar). Bhallaladeva seized the throne and imprisoned his mother Sivagami (Ramya Krishna), who raised Amarendra as her own son along with Bhallaladeva.
Sivagami announced Amarendra as the king-in-waiting and Bhallaladeva as the army chief. She also instructed Amarendra to tour the kingdom and learn about its people. During his journey, he met and fell in love with Devasena (Anushka Shetty), the princess of Kuntala, a vassal kingdom of Mahishmati. He disguised himself as a commoner and wooed her with the help of Kattappa.
Bhallaladeva learned about their relationship and plotted to separate them. He sent an emissary to Kuntala, who delivered a marriage proposal from Sivagami for Devasena.
